Protect Your Gums With Vitamin C

Vitamin C has many health benefits. As an ascorbic acid, this water-soluble vitamin is found in many foods, fruit in particular, and is a natural booster for the growth, development and repair of the human body. But did you know Vitamin C also does wonders for your gums?

It’s true! Vitamin C is nature’s healer. When you consume Vitamin C, it gives the lining of your gums support, protecting them from harmful bacteria. The nutrient also produces collagen, which is a basic protein that makes up your connective tissues, including your gums. Collagen keeps your gums tight around your teeth, and your teeth to your jawbone. That tightness creates a seal, helping prevent bad bacteria from getting in and festering inside your mouth.

Put simply, when your gums are healthy, your mouth is healthy - and Vitamin C is a piece of the puzzle that helps make that happen. However, as mentioned before, Vitamin C is water-soluble, which means your body won’t store it long-term. The solution? Consume Vitamin C everyday. Multivitamins and supplements are good options, as are fruits and vegetables.

Another option for maintaining your Vitamin C intake is to use special Vitamin C toothpaste or mouthwash. The benefit to this is you can apply the nutrient directly to your gums while brushing (or swishing). Doing this routinely will help your gums become strong, protected, and fight against the risk of gum disease.

If you have concerns about the health of your gums, or want to explore further options for caring for your teeth, speak with your dentist. They can recommend toothpastes and treatments that will work best for you.
